What is your job title and what are you responsible for day-to-day?
I am the HSEQ (Health, Safety, Environmental and Quality) Manager at Corfad Civil and Construction.
We have only 11 permanent staff but can have up to 120 subcontractors and 30 pieces of plant out on site, multitasking is important. My role is multifaceted and will jump from doing tenders to HR to getting plant compliant on the railway. I will use nearly all the different modules on Skytrust during the week.
What do you enjoy most about your role?
I think the fact that it is very diverse, no one day is the same. I am continually being challenged and I always welcome the opportunity learn new skills.
What is the best advice that has had the most impact on you?
A piece of poetry my father used to love by Rudyard Kipling
“If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too:
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or, being lied about, don’t deal in lies,”
What has been one challenging situation in your role and how did you resolve it?
This is a hard question as there have been numerous challenging situations in my role, as you become more experienced, your response becomes less reactive and the challenges not as overwhelming. However, I have found the main key to resolving issues is being a good communicator and to encourage others to have open and clear communication.
What is something that is unique to your role that others may be unaware of?
My title says HSEQ Manager, but I would say that I am an all-round business person who has an understanding and input into most areas of our company.
How did Skytrust assist with getting approved for ISO certifications 45001, 9001 and 14001?
I would like to credit Skytrust as being the platform that played a major part in our accreditations. It is not just the fact that we achieved the accreditations on our first audit, we also impressed the auditor with our comprehensive use of Skytrust and the ease of availability of all our documents and records.
Without Skytrust, what are some of the difficulties you would face in your role?
We would be running several different systems to maintain all our necessary documentation and records. Tracking of training and inductions would be very time consuming and not reliable. Resourcing to maintain compliance and the room for error would increase.
What do you most like about Skytrust?
I did a lot of research with other systems before settling on Skytrust. It’s extremely cost-effective to have a system where most of the modules are included in the package and you can get started straight away with linking information. The online induction module has been a great strength for us as we have numerous contractors that we cannot possibly get in one place to induct. It is an extremely user-friendly system and all our workers and subcontractors find it easy to use. The Skytrust team are readily available to help and are also keen to improve by listening to their client’s suggestions and implementing these changes where possible.
